NIYA TECH LABS PTY LTD is a Victorian company working on accessibility in mobile games. It publishes the specifications it works to before shipping anything built against them, because a specification you cannot read is a claim rather than a commitment.
Why this order
Accessibility is always finishable next sprint.
Ask any small studio whether accessibility matters and the answer is yes. Look at what shipped and it is usually a reduced motion toggle that misses half the animations, plus a colour palette nobody measured.
That is not hypocrisy. It is what happens when the work is scheduled last and the deadline does not move. The only reliable fix we know of is to invert the order: write the test, publish it, and refuse to call something finished until it passes.
So this company builds the specifications and the harness first. A title comes when the harness can answer the question. That is slower and it is the only version we think is honest.
Written down so it can be argued with
A published specification can be wrong in public. Section 2 fixes a thumb arc against a 6.7 inch device, which is a choice someone with better data may want to challenge. Section 3 says a timer must be removable without losing content, which some designers will say breaks their game. Both are more useful as arguable positions than as private preferences.
Method
How a specification gets tested.
Each of the four sections on the home page has a check that runs and produces a pass or a fail. None of them relies on anyone's judgement about whether something feels accessible.
- Colour vision
- The palette is converted to relative luminance and every pair is compared. Screenshots are desaturated and re-checked for whether game state is still readable, then run through deuteranope, protanope and tritanope simulations. A hue-only distinction fails all three.
- Reach
- A thumb arc is projected onto a device screenshot for a stated hand length and grip, for left and right hands. Any interactive element needed during play whose centre falls outside the arc is a fail. Targets under 44 by 44 points are a fail regardless of position.
- Timing
- A build is played with every timer disabled. If any content becomes unreachable, or any progression stalls, that is a fail. The check exists because the usual implementation quietly gates content behind the timed mode.
- Motion
- The build runs with the operating system reduced motion setting on, and frames are differenced to find anything still moving that is not required by gameplay. Residual decorative motion is a fail.
These checks run against our own builds. We do not offer them as an audit service, we do not certify anyone, and passing them is not a legal compliance statement about the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) or any standard.
